Ethical Leadership

Ethical leadership are the principles, values, and beliefs that define what is right and what is wrong, lead by someone who influences people and/or has some authority of some kind. CEO and managers of companies manage a lot of people indifferent scales, where they need core values and ethical belief to run a company, and these are to be used in day-to-day work structure.

The leaders have to give trust to their followers, present themselves with honesty, have consideration of others, have charisma and charm to be liked by the organization and the people in it, as well as to be fair with the people around them. Leaders set this moral structure for an organization or group, and must commit to uphold the values of the company to be a clear representation of these standards, as well as to set the tone for the company.

An effective ethical leader has to act ethically at all times to be an inspiration, and set personal examples to others. The ethical leader communicates and manages the culture to promote ethical behavior within people.  Leaders need an open perspective to see the entire spectrum and learn about the diverse ideas of employees, checking what type of impact his or her decisions will make on people, the company, and the community. They need this to achieve the right decisions in their management.

The effective leader needs a good moral compass and not get into moral disengagement practices. The moral compass is started at young age, created by the parents, as well as the people who they surround themselves with. If an adult doesn’t have an adequate moral compass, they will go outside for guidance in moral disengagement situations. The group follows the leader, and it will imitate their actions, but is more likely to imitate unethical behavior, that’s the reason, a leader need to be a great example for the group at all times.

People have high opinions of their own character, and this could lead them to act unethically, without them noticing their behavior, and justifying themselves or getting into a selective engagement and disengagement of their morality. The believe that we are moral people and we do good for the community, like a leadership role in a non-profit or church, can lead to someone to act with little or none self-reflection of their acts, creating as results unethical mistakes. Some leaders are giving uncritical support, given them an over confidence comparing to others, like in the case of Kenneth Lay, a big philanthropist, and son of a Baptist preacher, that abused his power in the Enron Corporation as well as committing accounting fraud making him a convicted felon.

To unethical leaders they have a sense of entitlement where they think rules don’t apply to them, doing wrong things and they don’t see the issue because they are so convinced of their importance, justifying themselves from laws and ethical rules of society. The idea that are rules are important but they could be broken or there are ways around them, is just one of the justifications leaders can get into to break laws. They believe they are untouchable, and/or they won’t be caught, but reality is different and unethical leaders are no exempt from the law.

For a company to establish ethical behavior, it needs to start from top management. The leaders need to be a visible role model, where employees can take cues about the appropriate behavior and examples of how their leaders act, to imitate, and learn from them.

A lot of the companies, when they are just starting they focus on the mission and vision statement, as well as their corporate objectives, but it is necessary to establish and communicate the expected ethical behavior through a code of ethics, where it showcases the organization’s values and ethical rules of the company. When employees are just hired, in their initial training, companies should have trained them in their code of ethical rules, as well to do more leadership training in the future where the company can do seminars, workshops, and have it in the employee manual. A yearly workshop or seminar that combine other leadership training programs will make the staff and management stronger in their mission, and maintaining their ethic rules. Management can also institutionalize an ethical culture by measuring the performance of the staff and seeing if they are implementing the code of ethics manual in their day-to-day work, and reward the top people in their scores.

Management need to promote effective financial management, where they use resources in a socially responsible way, and are cost-effective but never sacrifice a long-term institutional capacity.  Another important implementation for a company is to provide a safe protective mechanism where employees can discuss ethical dilemmas and report unethical behavior without the fear of being reprimanded. These could be done with counselors, or other type of manager.

Actions have consequences, and leaders as well as for followers need to realize what is important for an objective, but always maintain the moral standards. A leader can question their actions to make sure all the decisions they are making go to an objective that is ethical, and your actions are moral contributing to a greater good. Power can corrupt individuals, and is good to stay grounded and not just focus on your rights as an individual, but consider other’s rights first. A good leader is not thinking about themselves, or what is his or her greater good, but thinks for a bigger picture, and a vision of what is best for the entire group and community. As a leader, acknowledge when you are wrong, you don’t have to be right all the time, but knowing your shortcomings and making a change on them, benefits the entire group. These are just some practices of some of the top leaders like Steve Jobs, Martin Luther King, and Mahatman Gandhi, where they have a vision for the entire community, and not their benefit.

Tesla set to open a store in Brooklyn

Tesla Motors is expanding to New York City — not with a flashy showroom in Manhattan, but with a brick-and-mortar sales and service center in Brooklyn.
The new Tesla location opening Friday in Red Hook is not the kind of place where you can leave with the keys to your new Model S in hand, but it’s a big move for Tesla and makes its electric cars more accessible to the biggest city in the country.
If you’re interested in learning more about Tesla cars, the Red Hook store is the perfect place to start. The glass double doors on 160 Van Brunt St. open right into a showroom with two Model S cars and an undercarriage on display — not something that’s featured in most car stores.
But it’s a necessary component of a Tesla sales center, where people can come if they’re curious about what exactly makes a Tesla car a Tesla car. You can take a look at the battery that makes up the entire base of the car and see the two motors that power the all-wheel-drive models.
Not only that, but you can test drive a Model S right out of the store. Nothing tells you more about a car than taking it for a spin, and experiencing thatautopilot feature for yourself is more informative than reading about it online.

Build your own Tesla

While you can’t purchase and drive off in a Tesla at the new Brooklyn store, you can fully customize and order your own. Potential customers can select paint jobs, interiors and more on touchscreen displays and see how much it will cost. From there, you can send your order off to California and expect a Tesla to show up at your doorstep in six to eight weeks. Alternatively, you can email the build to yourself to think about it a little longer.

Why Tesla picked Brooklyn

New York City is a strong market for Tesla — especially Brooklyn — and Brooklyn is the easiest place to find 25,000 square feet of space.
Brooklyn is also a more family-oriented borough. With Tesla’s safety ratings being among the highest of any car ever made, the cars are a very attractive option for young families looking for safe transportation. The Red Hook location in particular has seen a lot of construction and revamping recently, which points to that area becoming a more popular destination for young families in the near future.
By being right next to the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel, it also isn’t too inconvenient for people who live in Manhattan to make the trip down.
And let’s not ignore the comparable absence of traffic in Red Hook, which will allow you to test out a Model S without getting caught trying to merge through three lanes of midday congestion.

Tidal

Tidal (stylized as TIDAL, also known as TIDALHiFi) is a subscription-based music streaming service that combines lossless audio and high definition music videos with curated editorial. The service has over 25 million tracks and 85,000 music videos.Currently offering no free subscription plans, Tidal claims to pay the highest percentage ofroyalties to music artists and songwriters within the music streaming market. Tidal offers two digital music streaming services: Tidal Premium (lossy quality) and Tidal HiFi (lossless CD quality - FLAC-based 16-Bit/44.1 kHz). Tidal was launched in 2014 byNorwegian/Swedish public company Aspiro. It has distribution agreements with all of thethree major labels, in addition to many indies. In the first quarter of 2015, the parent company Aspiro was acquired by Project Panther Ltd., which is owned by Shawn "Jay Z" Carter.
Following the acquisition of Aspiro by Jay Z in March 2015, a mass-marketing campaign was introduced to relaunch Tidal. Multiple music artists changed their social media profiles design blue, and posted the phrase "#TIDALforAll" on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. A press conference took place on March 30, 2015, introducing sixteen music artists to the stage, including Jay Z, who were all co-owners and stakeholders in Tidal. The service was promoted as being the first artist-owned streaming service. Each artist publicly signed a declaration, which opened with: "Throughout history, every movement began with a few individuals banding together with a shared vision – a vision to change the status quo."

The relaunch of Tidal with the new artist-owned model were mostly panned by publications and fellow musicians alike. Some praised the impressive high fidelity, lossless audio quality, and the higher subscription fees which would result in higher royalties to the artists and songwriters, whilst others felt the high subscription fees and exclusive Tidal content from the artists involved could result in an increase of music piracy. As of March 2015, the service itself claims to have over 580,000 paying users after being integrated with its sister service, WiMP, as well as 17,000 using the high fidelity service. Tidal currently operates in 31 countries. In March 2016, Tidal announced it has over 3 million subscribers.

Digital Age for the Music Industry – Good or bad?

We are part of the digital age where we can sale, create businesses, and even meet people online. The digital age has made a big progress for society in so many ways, and has helped independent artists and musicians to get ahead of the game competing with the big conglomerate networks. Before iTunes and YouTube, an artist need it to be signed to a record label to get distribution and promotion through radio and network channels. Now anyone can be heard, be seen, become “YouTube Famous,” or popular online through social media channels like Vine, Twitter, and Instagram (just to name a few); you only need a camera, show some type of talents, and mainly have an interesting personality.

At the same time, digital age has affected the overall music industry through piracy. The creation of Napster in 1999, lead the way for people to pirate music and a big decline in music sales in the overall industry. In 2000, According to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), the music industry were making 13.36 billion dollars in album sales, but by 2014, the sales dropped to less than 4 billion dollars. The decline in sales represent a 76% of loss for the industry.

Source: RIAA Year-End Industry Shipment and Revenue Statistics (2000-2014)

The music industry has had a share of waves in changes for the way music has been consumed through 2000 to now. Consumer behavior for consumption in the digital market started shifting from 2005 where it dominated the music for phones, like ringtones and ring back, until 2008 with a sudden collapse of this sales. Digital sales of music started booming until 2013 where consumers started shifting to revenues from ad-supported music streaming and subscriptions base services. RIAA estimated that 7.7 million internet users paid for on-demand streaming in 2014. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) shared that the music streaming had 1.87 billion dollars in revenue from subscription, ad-supported streaming, and Soundexchange distribution (Charges royalties for satellite car radio), and this accounted for 41.4% of the digital music sales.

Source: Pixabay

Music sales have dropped dramatically, but is music streaming helping the industry? In 2015, music streaming sites helped to boost digital sales by 6.9%, and finally the industry sees a stop to the catastrophic decline in revenues for music sales. Japan, the second world’s largest music market, for the first time in five years, had a growth in digital revenue.
In America, by 2015, most of the revenue came from streaming with a 34.3%, Digital downloads accounted for 34%, 28.8% for Physical sales, and 2.9% from Synch. Physical sales is still the number one choice for consumers in other markets like in Japan where 78% of the music sales revenue comes from CDs, Germany physical sales of CD’s account for 70% of the revenue, and in Africa they get 62% from physical sales.

Opinion – Consumers now has the option to choose to buy a single, before you would need to buy the entire album to listen to your favorite song from the artist. You didn’t had the option to listen to the songs whenever you wanted, only listen it in the radio. All this pushed consumers to obtain the CDs, but now there is no incentive to buy the entire album, with exception of just being a supportive fan. So if a consumer only bough one song instead of the 10, that’s a 90% loss. The music executives’ needs to find this incentives to give to consumers to buy the entire album, whether eliminating some of the current digital options and loss part of the streaming revenue with hopes consumers would have the incentive to buy, or find new incentives to give the consumers to buy the entire album.

Be a Hunger Hero! Help End Child Hunger with the UCF Hunger Project

There is a growing crisis in America. 1 out of 6 people in America face hunger, 1 out of every 4 kids in America faces food insecurity, meaning they don’t know how long their food resources would last and if they could get more in the future. 17 million kids live in US homes with food insecurity and 10 million of those children are under the age of 6. Children are skipping meals or full days without food, affecting their daily lives, growth, the way they react psychological, socially, and their learning education.

This could happen to any family and it could be happening closer than you think. In some families the bread winner has lost his or her job, and struggles to find a new one with the same pay scale. Others are working 40 hours a week, but it’s not enough to cover living expenses. Children are the future of the country, and it is the morals thing to make a change, that will benefit society as well as economics, as these children will be future leaders to the world.

An organization taking a stand on this issue is “Feeding Children Everywhere,” a non-profit organization that empowers people to assemble healthy meals for hungry children, providing the healthiest meals possible for children and families in the US and around the world.

The non-profit organizes “Hunger projects” in the community to gather and pack food to be shipped for those who need. In the event, Volunteers come together in assembly lines to hand package healthy meals and bring hope and love to children anywhere in the world. The project gets people excited and interested to make a difference, to give back to the local community and the globe, working for a greater good, and be empowered to be someone great!

University of Central Florida is organizing a Hunger Project with “Feeding Children Everywhere” to help reach the goal o 12,000 meals that will be sent to Haiti. The event will take place in the Student Union Cape Florida Ballroom on April 11th from 1 to 2 PM.

For more information, contact Emily Simpson at vucfrelief@ucf.edu or to learn the different ways you can bring your community together to make a difference in the lives of hungry children, visit www.feedingchildreneverywhere.com for more information.

I Stand With Kesha

There has been a media storm over the Kesha case against Dr. Luke, her music producer. A lot of the fans, the media, and celebrities are rooting for Kesha to gain back her freedom, after allegedly Dr. Luke has been mentally, physically, and sexually abusing the artist for years.

In February 19, 2016 Kesha was denied her injunction against the producer.  Images of her sobbing after the verdict surfed the media, creating an outrage among people. The case states that Dr. Luke has threatened Kesha and her family, as well drugged her.  In recent days, Dr. Luke tried to set a lawsuit against Kesha’s Mom, Pebe Sebert, and her manager, Jack Rovner, arguing that they had made defamatory claims, extorted him, and they were trying to break Kesha’s contract. The judge dropped the lawsuit.

Kesha was denied of her injunction and freedom from her alleged abuser, and contract with Sony Music. The artist is not able to record with any other company unless she records 8 more albums with her and Dr. Luke.  This is an important case in society, as women who have been abused, try to come forward and fight their abusers but in some cases the government blames the victim and there is no justice served.

People has taken a stand and they are boycotting Sony music, by stopping to buy any more products of them until they free her. Thousands of people have signed a petition and agreement to boycott one of the music giants in Change.org

The petitions states “By signing this petition to boycott Sony you stand against their manipulative and money hungry acts and refuse to buy music/products from a band that abuses their artist like this!”
The topic has become a trendy social media news where people are sharing their thoughts and support to Kesha, using the hash tags #FreeKesha #IStandWithKesha. Celebrities have come forward expressing their thoughts and support to their artist, including Kelly Clarkson who has worked with Dr. Luke before. Taylor swift donated $250,000 to Kesha for her legal battle costs against the producer.

You can sign the petitions to take a stand against Sony and joins thousands to support women’s rights and Kesha in change.org

What social media should I use? Social media trends

What social media should I use? Social media trends - Top 5 social media sites to use.

Can you imagine that over a decade ago people didn’t had social media? There was a time where you didn’t had to update everyone you knew with what you are doing or what you were eating. Well times has changed, and now there are multiple sites to choose from; and as a social norm, you must have a way to stay connected online. People use social media to connect with old friends, re-unite with lost family members, businesses stay connected with customers and keep them engaged, professionals connect with future possible employers, and more. Technology is rapidly evolving, and there is always a new site trying to beat the rest, and some will accomplish it, but others will just fade away. There is something for everyone, but which one should you have? Which of the hundreds new options should you choose?

Facebook gets the crown! It is the top social media network on the market, and it was one of the pioneers in the social media trend. The company gets an estimate 1.59 billion monthly active users monthly and 1 billion logins per day. Facebook is used basically by everyone, from family and friends, to businesses, and stay connected to your favorite artist. Although because of the big popularity, some of the younger users has shifted or opted for other sites because it is not considered as hip or up-to-the-minute as it used to be before. The social media site is considered more personal, as it is used mostly to stay connected with family and friends.

It is a network of news and ideas in a form of microblogging in 140 characters or less. The website is mainly used to get quick news, and stays connected with influencers, politicians, artists, etc. Read the trendiest topics in the world and important messages from these important people.

It is a professional Facebook, where users connect with business people and employers creating their own network. From getting reviews and references from people you have worked in the past, to putting your resume an experience online.

It is one of the most popular social networks for photo sharing online.  It allows you take photos or record small videos on your phone, and post them on your social media within seconds. It is one of the trendiest social media platforms, and a lot of the teen and young adults have move to this site for a more up-to-the-minute social media.

Google has dominated mostly everything online, and it was to expect that they would come up with their own social media, which is Google +.  Unfortunately, this is a lot similar to Facebook, with the only difference of posting as groups instead of your entire network. If you have some type of Google account (Youtube, Gmail, etc) you need to have a gmail to use the other platforms. In a way, they force you to have an account. The positive for this network, is that it helps you in the SEO of your blog or business. It shows Google a more branding aspect, and users can find you easier.

Other trendy extra options worth mentioning are Vine and Snapchat, which a lot of the younger generations are moving to. They are for sharing small funny videos with other people online. There are multiple more, and there is always new websites that come in beta, but it’s hard to have them all because you need to maintained and keep a social media reputation in the, so select the ones that goes mostly to your generation and target population.

Orlando, not just fantasy but a world of culture - Places to enjoy arts and culture in Orlando

Orlando, not just fantasy but a world of culture - Places to enjoy arts and culture in Orlando

Orlando is one of the top touristic destinations in the US, filled with entertainment and tourism options for the entire family; after all this is the home of Walt Disney World and Universal studios, But there is so much more that Central Florida has to offer. Orlando is big on the arts and culture. The community is filled with art entrepreneurs and supporters, and as the city keeps on growing, the arts and cultural keeps on developing as well.

Here are some of the best options that Orlando can offer the community, places to enjoy the art and culture of Orlando:

                                                                           Photo: geekrest

Film

Orlando is pretty big on film, they have multiple colleges and universities that teach film, from Valencia College that offers a more technical degree, to Full Sail know for the technology and expensive equipment they use to teach their students.

Central Florida has the Enzian Theater, a non-profit art house movie theater where the big film festivals are hosted, like the Florida Film Festival and the Orlando Film Festival. The atmosphere is way different comparing to your local movie theater; it has a bar out side surrounded by trees. Inside, the movie theatergoers sit in around tables where they enjoy drinks and have dinner. All the films are considered art films, retro, or independent.

                                            Photo: Orlando Shakespeare Theater

Theater & Performing arts

Orlando, as many of the other big cities, get the Broadway Across America’s plays where big Broadway shows come to town and play locally, but it also has multiple community theaters. The community theaters organizations are very impressive to watch, especially because the level of quality in there shows are excellent and very exciting to watch, from great art direction and acting, to even having special effects on stage.  Most of local theaters are non-profit organizations, and a lot of the people are volunteer, but the actors and people involved have an amazing talent, and there skill level is exceptional, thanks to the many colleges and universities close by with students trying to gain experience as interns. You also get a lot of professionals involved in the play who work at the theme parks, with people of the best knowledge and experience in show business, all for an average of $20 a ticket.

Some of the best local theaters in town are the Orlando Shakespeare Theater, The Mad Cow Theater, and The Downtown Theater.

Orlando is also home to the Orlando Ballet, started in 1974 and is one of the most prestigious ballet organizations in the state; and The Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra that plays over 100 performances per year.

                                                                                       Photo: Wikipedia:Mr.X

Art

There are numerous of art galleries throughout Central Florida, from museums to art expositions. One of the most notorious museums in Orlando is the Orlando Museum of Art, who hosts the most prominent exhibitions, and presents to the public 10 to 12 exhibitions on-site and 13 exhibitions off-site. The OMA (Orlando Museum of Arts) founded in 1924, has the purpose to continue the growth of Florida, ardent community support of the arts and as a leading cultural institution in the region, and it has by enriching the cultural life of Florida and providing excellence in the visual arts.

Another great place to recommend is the City Arts Factory in the Downtown Arts District of Orlando; this is the largest collective of art galleries, which showcases an infusion of international artwork with local projects.

All through out Central Florida, and many different seasons through the year, there are multiple different art festivals, some of the most notorious are the Orlando Art Festival Spring, The Maitland Art Festival Fall, Uptown Altamonte Art Expo, or the Winter park Sidewalk Art Festival. The eye-catching art festivals are all unique in their own way, and they showcase the most prominent emerging artists of Florida and around the globe.

Orlando is a rich place for culture and arts, and this is just the start for what Orlando has in plan; there no signs of stopping for “The City Beautiful” and they will keep on growing. Recently, Orlando just opened the Dr. Phillips Center for the performing arts in Downtown Orlando, which features a 2,700-seat Broadway theater, a 1,700-seat acoustic hall for ballet, operas and orchestral performances, and a 300-seat venue for smaller functions. Another future project that is coming along in Orlando is the Creative Village, a mixed used architectural project that will featured all the needs to “live, learn, work, and play.”  Orlando is growing faster in many different directions, from tourism, medical, business, arts and culture; we will just have to wait and see, how this fast growing city keeps making a stand and innovate in the world of culture.

Micro Theater Miami, Trendy arts and hip atmosphere

Miami is known for the night life and trendy vibe, with great beaches and social atmosphere, but also for the arts and culture of the city. Places like Wynwood, Lincoln road, South Beach and Art Deco District, just to name a few, makes the city a beautiful and artistic contemporary cultural hub.  There is a hidden place, that mostly locals know, and you should add it to your list of “must do’s” in Miami, this is the Micro Theater of Miami.

Following the tiny home movements, the place is a venue of several small theaters that reaches a maximum capacity of up to 15 spectators per showing and the show runs for 10 to 15 minutes.  The several theaters are shipping containers painted with stylish and fashionable arts and graphics that give a hip and sophisticated vibe.  After the show, you can socialize in an outdoor bar with a garden atmosphere and enjoy drinks, as well as food, until you wait for another show. The company describes it as “A constellation of actors that present great texts all year round..”

The Micro Theater Miami is done with the Knight Foundation and the CCEMiami (The Spanish Cultural Center), so most of the shows are in Spanish, but there are some English show alternatives. The theater has the option of “Primetime,” 7 plays in scene and 6 showing of each from Thursday through Saturday, from 8p.m. to 11p.m. The second option is for “Golfa” or more late night showings and a excellent night life, with 6 plays in scene and showing from 11p.m. to 1a.m. Fridays to Saturdays, and Sundays from 7p.m. to 10 a.m.

Benefits of assisting these performances are that you don’t know which famous actors can appear or come out of this theater. Because of the high production of telenovelas in Miami, there are a lot of the actors that take Micro Theater Miami as a hobby or a way to exercise their talents, and keep enhancing their performance in acting. As a spectator you will be surprised to see some recognized talents from Spanish television.

The place is located in 1490 Biscayne Blvd. in the downtown area of Miami. Check out their current shows and their description at www.microtheatermiami.com

The Lake Lugano House

The Lake Lugano House in Lugano, Switzerland, is modern home with minimalistic luxuries and made with environmental materials.  Surrounded by trees and nature, and located in the slope of a hill, it gives a feeling of openness, transparency, and tranquility of being in the freedom of the outdoors and the green environment.

The Home is design by Architect Jacopo Mascheroni with JM Architecture, and their design team Paolo Basco, Rex Gapux, and Jasen Lara. In a built area of 350mq, the house overlooks in one side the mountains in a private zone, while the bedroom areas has the garden view overlooking the lake. The House is design as an environmental property with the use of geothermal energy, rain water collection system, roof gardens, and a low emittance glass insulated with argon gas to optimize the thermal efficiency, and the use of natural shading with the trees.

The house has an amazing and unique style of design, but it’s definitely not for everyone. The idea of walls being glasses could be considered as not a private home, even though you are sounded by trees and nature, and there is a white mural in the back that blocks viewers and makes the home private. It depended on what sense you see it, but definitely this house is a piece of art, with great uniqueness and style.
